For our family vacation we went to California and stayed in San Diego. On the second day we went to Mission Beach and ate lunch at this awesome restaurant/entertainment area called the Wavehouse. They had this thing called the Brutus Maximus wave maker and in this vid you get to see some amateur surfers and boogie boarders giving it a try. I know the quality isn't very good, but I had to use my mom's digital camera (which is not so good at taking vids and is better suited for taking pics) either way it was cool to watch some of these guys try the wave out. Hope you enjoy it.

History of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Plank walkways along shores are portrayed as romantic in movies and indicative of lazy days strolling by the water. In 1865, John Leibrant constructed a public bathhouse built near the famous landmark. Bathhouses became extremely popular around Santa Cruz. Visitors were educated of the healing properties of immersing themselves in salt water. Picture stands, shops, and restaurants began to crop up around this area adding the history of the Santa Cruz boardwalk.

By the turn of the century, Fred W. Swanton who was a well-known promoter decided to build a casino and plank walkway, which opened during 1904 and burned down 22 months later in 1906. This didn't stop Swanton who made plans to rebuild the same day the fire occurred. It reopened exactly one year to the day of the fire. The casino and plank walkway was beautifully lit with several white lights. The claim it has proudly made since the beginning is it stands as "Coney Island of the West."

Amusement rides began to appear around the area in 1908. The first roller coaster was constructed of wood, took thrill seekers on a four minute ride, and was $35,000 in construction costs. A merry go round was added in 1911 and still remains as a viable attraction to visitors. The most popular ride to date is the Giant Dipper, which opened in 1924. By 2007 55 million ride enthusiasts had been on the Giant Dipper.

Many Miss California pageants add to the history of the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. They were held there for a number of years. The area was hard hit to a degree during the Depression and even World War II timeframe, but made a strong comeback during the fifties and sixties. The Autorama, Tilt A Whirl, and Wild Mouse were constructed during this era. The Sky Glider which uses ski lifts takes riders over the beach for a bird's eye view.

The 1970's and 80's brought additional rides and renovations. During the 80's a banquet and conference center was added to the tune of $10 million. This included giving the Victorian appeal back to the area as well as updating gift shops. A movie "The Lost Boys (1987)," was filmed in an around Santa Cruz and many of the scenes were filmed right in this area.

Friday night concerts offered free of charge by Pepsi started in 1988. Damage sustained by the Plunge building during the 1989 earthquake precipitated a renovation over $5 million. The state of the art Neptune's Kingdom opened hosting miniature golf, restaurants, game, and entertainment spaces.

Throughout the nineties and the first decade of the millennium, the history of the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk continues to change and grow. More rides and attractions have been added. Presently, there are thirty-five rides, several food offerings, three arcades, and dances and other entertainment are offered.

The sandy coast stretches alongside for one mile of Monterey Bay to San Lorenzo River's mouth. This is California's oldest amusement park throughout the entire state. It is family owned and operated even to present day.

Take a Vacation in the Beach Resort Town of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan

Barry is a city in the county of Vale of Glamorgan near the city of Cardiff in Wales. It is on the northern coast of the Bristol Channel. The area is home to several beaches and the Barry Island Pleasure Park.

There is evidence that the area has been inhabited from the New Stone age as polished stone ax heads were found along with some flint tools. There have been excavations of Bronze Age sites and there is an Iron Age fort found when they built Barry College. Barry Island is thought to have been a raider base around 1087 when the Vikings were trying to gain land in the area.

After the Normans came this area was given to two families to build manners; the Penmark and Dinas Powys. These lands were further split into several dub manors and one family built Barry Castle on the high grounds from which they could see Bristol Channel. It really was not a big castle just a stone manor house. It was added to in the 14th century giving it more of a castle look with a large hall and gatehouse and the ruins are still there today.

During the late 1800's coal was being mined in Cardiff and Barry Railway Company was built so that coal could be transported from Cardiff to the docks in Barry for shipment. This made it a great port and there were so many ships ship repair yards were built as were flour mills and ice factories. Population rose with all the industry and since those that worked hard needed somewhere to have fun they took Barry Island, which was in the middle of the channel and made it a resort. Today the Island is a pleasure park and beach resort with over 50 rides that are great fun for the whole family.

Today the heavy industry has all but stopped and the town has gone more into leisure and tourism endeavors. There are wonderful shops to find new and used wares, there are cafes and restaurants that serve delicious food. Arcades are abundant as are some amusement halls that visitors will enjoy.

Other attractions are Triassic Towers which is on the sea front and is an indoor adventure center. Quasar Center is where you can play a game of laser (like paint ball). A great museum to see is Barry Island Railway Heritage center and you can ride on a stream train. Visit the Llanerch Vineyard to try some of their wine and stay at the Bed and Breakfast.

Most accommodations right in Barry are Bed and Breakfasts or guest houses. There is the Hillside Bed and Breakfast an Edwardian house with great hospitality. Tadross Hotel is one of the few hotels in the area and it is a three start hotel with en suite rooms. The Marine hotel only has six rooms but they are clean and comfortable. There is a restaurant and bar downstairs.

Barry is a charming little town with a most wonderful beach. There are other things to go see all within a few miles drive too. The beach is great and it should provide you with a wonderful vacation.

The sand dunes, such as the 15 m tall ones in Playa Pilar are among the highest in the Caribbean and are greatly admired by visitors. However, the dunes are susceptible to damage from the hurricanes that strike the Island and the continuous flow of people around the area. For the last reason, many of the hotels have built paths to the beach, and camping, walking over the dunes, and parking vehicles in these protected areas are also prohibited.

Biodiversity is unbelievable in the diving spots. Recent research has revealed the existence of six blind fish in a briny-watered cave to the North of Ciego de Avila. The specimens, including both sexes, belong to the Lucifuga type. Its size is between seven and eight centimeters long, its color is violet and white, and it's been questioned if they belong to a new species or subspecies. A type of shrimp, not scientifically described yet, is also undergoing a research process. Land fauna includes the Maja de Santa Maria, the Jubo Plateado, and the Comun, three totally innocuous Cuban snakes that used to be seen throughout the area. Along with these reptiles, Jutia Rata and some other endemic varieties, such as lizards, mollusks, and the Arriero Bird, are exclusively found here.

All the research and methods of handling the ecosystem are developed under a Project of Biodiversity Preservation, sponsored by the United Nations and run in the Sabana-Camaguey Archipelago, to develop tourism, fishing, agriculture, and the handling of forests without damaging the environment. In these keys, nature set the conditions for laziness and leisure time by providing a coral reef that buffers the strength of the winds and heavy seas, creating a scenario ready to enjoy, protect, and preserve.

There are few places in the U.S. that offer professional and college football, baseball, hockey, and college basketball all in one concentrated area, and if they do, changes are, they're crowded cities with not a palm tree or waterway in sight.

It's why each year thousands of sports enthusiasts vacation in Tampa Bay, the metropolitan area that encompasses Tampa, St. Petersburg, and even Sarasota. Because the weather is beautiful year-round, there are always travelers visiting the area.
